What is a Dashlane Master Password?

When you create a Dashlane account, you create a login and a Master Password. Your Master Password is your private key to encrypt all of your data saved in Dashlane. By successfully entering your Master Password, Dashlane will be able to decrypt your data locally on your device and grant you access to your saved data.

Your Master Password is:

  • Always private
  • Never stored on our servers
  • Never transmitted over the internet
  • Never shared with Dashlane
  • Only known by you

Your Master Password is like a key to a safe. If you have the correct key, you can open the safe. If not, the safe will remain closed. The key never moves with the safe; it always remains with you.

How do I choose a strong Master Password?

We employ the strongest master password requirements in the industry. To protect you further, not even Dashlane has the key to your encrypted data and your Master Password is unable to be recovered. Therefore, it is vital to choose a unique password that is complex but also not something you won’t remember. It’s also important to choose a password that you’ve never used on any other website. Additionally, to learn more about choosing a strong password, please refer to this blog post.

By default, your Master Password is required to contain 8 or more characters including the following:

  • 1 uppercase letter
  • 1 lowercase letter
  • 1 number

We don’t recommend the use of symbols as different keyboards and devices won’t always have the symbols you need.

Mobile options

We understand that typing can be tedious, especially while using a mobile device, so we’ve provided easily accessible options such as fingerprint unlock or pin code. These options will act as your Master Password if enabled, however, you’ll still be required to enter your Master Password from time to time and after restarting your device.
